What it is

You receive a lump sum. In return, the provider purchases a portion of future receivables or sets payments tied to your sales. The cost is usually a fixed payback amount rather than a traditional interest rate. That total cost can be higher than a bank loan, and payments can be frequent. Read the payback amount, the payment schedule, and any fees before you accept.

Revenue-based financing, sometimes called a merchant cash advance, advances funds against future sales. Payments usually come out daily or weekly until the agreed amount is repaid.

Who it is for

  • Businesses with consistent card or bank deposits
  • Short-term working capital when a bank loan is a poor fit
  • Owners who can support daily or weekly payments

What partners often look for

Credit

Often more flexible than a bank loan. Many partners still review credit.

Time in business

Often at least 6 months

Revenue

Consistent deposits, commonly from about $10,000 a month

Recent business bank statements are usually required.

Questions

Is this the same as a merchant cash advance?

Many revenue-based products are structured as a purchase of future receivables, which is the structure behind a merchant cash advance. The agreement should say whether you are taking a loan or selling future sales.

How do payments work?

Partners commonly collect a percentage of sales or a fixed amount each business day or week until the payback amount is complete. The term often runs a few months to about 18 months, depending on the size and your sales.

Is the cost an interest rate?

Often no. The offer may show a purchase amount and a payback amount instead of an APR. Compare the total you repay, not only the speed.
